Immigration on the Cape and in our Nation:
Forming a Faithful Response
St. Peter’s Lutheran Church is currently showing the art exhibit “Building Bridges: Portraits of Immigrants and Refugees.” Open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and Sunday mornings 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, this display of photographs shows and tells the story of immigrants and refugees who have come to Massachusetts from more than eighteen countries around the world.
Also at St. Peter’s two panel discussions:
“Immigrant Life on Cape Cod and the Islands” is a panel discussion held on Saturday, June 23 at 10:00 am. The panel discussion will feature: Collin Mickle, Attorney at Law, Coordinator, Immigration Resource Center, Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands, Inc., Rev. Rod MacDonald, Chairperson for Refugee Support Action Team of the Nauset Interfaith Association, Andrea Kelton-Harris, First Lady, Zion Union Church, Hyannis, and Cecilia Gutierrez, Nantucket, translator for the Spanish-speaking Catholic congregation St. Mary of the Isle, Catholic Church, Nantucket. A light breakfast will be served.
“Immigrants and Refugees: Important Aspects of the National Situation.” Held on Monday, June 25 at 3:00 pm. The panel discussion will feature: Ms. Anna Fata – Diplomatic attaché at the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations. She will speak of growing up in an immigrant family, and the work of the Vatican and many nations for a Global Compact on Refugees and Immigration. The USA recently pulled out of this Compact.
Additional participants will include Ms. Emily Leung, Esq. – Immigration Attorney with the Justice Center of Southeastern Massachusetts, a subsidiary of South Coastal Legal Serves. She has much hands-on experience in immigrant services and is an expert on legislation pending in Congress on all aspects of immigration –DACA, comprehensive reform, refugee reception, sensitive locations, TPS, unaccompanied minors, et al., Rev. Richard Wilson – Priest of the Diocese of Fall River, Rector of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fall River, and executive editor of The Anchor, newspaper of the Diocese of Fall River. He will speak about the Church and Immigration – about his multi-ethnic parish, his past leadership of the Hispanic Ministries, his parish work in Honduras, and his nationally-recognized work in responding to immigration raids and mass seizures, and G. Thomas Ryan, moderator – Liturgist, St. Mary’s Nantucket; Christian Education director, Community of Jesus; tour leader (St. Peter’s to Germany in 2016); and chair of the Migrant and Refugee Committee of the Cape Cod Council of Churches.
