Since the late 1990’s a group of local people have been traveling to small village on an island off the coast of Haiti. The founder of this group is an artist from Wellfleet Ellen Lebow. She established a women’s art cooperative. The art is sold world-wide and helps the women’s families by providing money for food, education and housing. Valerie Bell, a member of Harwich United Methodist Church and a teacher at a local high school started bringing students to the village as a transformational travel experience. The students learned about life in a developing country and about Haitian culture.
